Antarctica Expeditions

Pakistan has the honour of establishing a Research Station on the Antarctica Continent in the years 1990 & 1991. Pakistan Maritime Museum has displayed whole account of the Antarctica expeditions through diorama in its ‘Pakistan Navy Gallery’. A team of 40 Scientists from the Ministry of Science & Technology, National Institute of Oceanography, Pakistan Army and Pakistan Navy left Karachi Port on 12 December 1990 onboard MV COLUMBIA LAND. The team established Jinnah Antarctic Research Station on 18 January 1991 and Pakistan became an Associate Member of the Scientific Committee in Antarctic Research in 1992. Moreover, on Pakistan Navy’s recommendation, Pakistan joined the Atlantic Treaty in 2012.
